CDU’s Master of Arts (M.A.) in Theology provides serious study of theology, moral principles, the sacramental system, spirituality, and the history of the Church among other subjects. Many students choose the M.A. solely as a way to increase their knowledge of the Catholic Faith, as well as to bring that knowledge to their families, careers, or individual lives. The M.A. program is also useful for individuals seeking careers in church work, or who are already involved in teaching or religious education, or are preparing for a religious vocation.
Students admitted to M.A. program complete a core curriculum (19 credits) and, in consultation with a faculty advisor, select a concentration area (15 concentration credits and 5 five elective credits) in one of four areas: Sacred Scripture, Philosophy/Theology, Ecclesial Service, or Catholic Culture. In addition
to coursework, students will also complete the following:
- A prerequisite course, Introduction to Christianity or The Basics of Catholicism: Faith, Life & Prayer, unless waived by the academic dean
- Graduate Academic Skills (a 1-credit course that extends over the whole program and is included in core requirements)
- A written comprehensive exam on each of the core courses
- A written comprehensive exam on each of the concentration courses
- Completion of a research paper of approximately thirty pages on a topic related to the area of concentration, to be submitted after all course work is completed. Students enroll in Thesis Direction (210-0000) and consult with an advisor to select a topic and complete within six months.

Why choose CDU?
- The
M.A. program at CDU is nationally accredited by the Accrediting
Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), which is recognized as a national accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education. The university is also certified
by the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia
(SCHEV).
- Our
distance learning format gives students the flexibility to
study at times and places that best fit their schedules,
eliminating the need to spend extended time on a college campus
or driving
to class each week.
- CDU is dedicated to providing a program of
faithful and systematic teachings of Sacred Scripture, the
living tradition of
the Church, and the authentic Magisterium, and the spiritual heritage
of the Fathers, Doctors and Saints.
- CDU is the right size university
to meet your needs. We have more students than you'll
find in the theology departments
of most major universities - and yet, because theology
is all we teach, we're
small enough to know each student personally.
- To assist students
and ease any 'nervousness' about
taking online classes, CDU offers a full-time online technical
help desk and student center faculty assistance.
- At CDU, distance learning does not mean isolated
and impersonal. Our community-based online student center provides
a place for prayer and spiritual support, lively discussions and general
conversation, and program-specific question and
answer desks.
- CDU courses are written and taught by world-renowned
Catholic theologians and scripture scholars.
- CDU’s one-of-a-kind
academic skills course helps adult learners
ease back into the rigors of
college work
by teaching academic writing, time and task management, and university-level study skills.
