About Matthew Bunson, PhD
Dr. Matthew E. Bunson is Faculty Liaison for CDU. He is also Senior Contributor for EWTN, including work with its TV, radio, print, and publishing divisions, including the National Catholic Register where he holds the title of Senior Editor.
Dr. Bunson is also a senior fellow of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology and is the author or co-author of over fifty books including: The Encyclopedia of Catholic History, The Pope Encyclopedia, We Have a Pope! Benedict XVI, The Encyclopedia of the Middle Ages, and the Encyclopedia of Saints. He served as general editor of Our Sunday Visitor’s Catholic Almanac and the editor of The Catholic Answer Magazine for Our Sunday Visitor. His book, Pope Francis (2013, Our Sunday Visitor), was the first English-language biography of the new pontiff and won the biography of the year from the Association of Catholic Publishers. His Encyclopedia of American Catholic History (2014, Our Sunday Visitor) won reference book of the year from the Catholic Press Association.
During the 2005 and 2013 papal interregnums and conclaves, Dr. Bunson served as a special consultant to USA Today and appears as a guest on many television and radio programs, including MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, Catholic Answers, and Relevant Radio. Aside from his PhD in Theological Studies with a concentration in Church History from the Graduate Theological Foundation, he holds a Bachelor’s degree in History, two Master’s degrees in Theology with specializations in Pastoral Theology and Church History, and a doctor of ministry degree in Pastoral Theology.
For CDU, Dr. Bunson has created and taught many courses and seminars. He led a three part series on the history of the Catholic Church in America, and he has also addressed The Crusades and the Inquisition and other important Church related historical topics.
