To meet the updated TCCED Guidelines Academic Year, Elementary Teachers of Religion must fulfill “150 clock hours of undergraduate-level coursework appropriately distributed among courses in Catholic doctrine, Sacred Scripture, morality/social justice and sacraments/liturgy…[consisting of] online, non-credit courses offered by an accredited Catholic University.”

The following complete series of non-credit online independent study courses and 3-week online seminars offered by CDU meet this criteria:

Online Independent Study Courses

  • View and/or listen to lesson lectures
  • Complete 2 or 3 graded assignments [open book – Grade of 75 or higher required to receive credit]
  • Complete course within two months

Online Three-Week Group Seminars

  • View and/or listen to weekly lectures
  • Participate and post in the discussion area during each of the 3 weeks
  • Complete 1-page reflection paper within two weeks after seminar concludes

PLEASE NOTE: Catholic School teachers are NOT required to complete Level 1 before beginning the CDU TCCED Guideline Requirement Series/Level 2 Equivalency. Because Level 1 workshops do not meet undergraduate-level standards, they Do Not fulfill any area of TCCED Guideline Requirements.

When an individual completes a course or seminar with a minimum grade of 75%,the student will be invited to download a certificate, confirming completion of the course and the corresponding CEU’s/clock hours awarded.

Once all course requirements for certification through CDU are successfully completed, the individual must print and submit the certificates of completion, along with the application for certification (click here to access and download an application), to his or her principal, who will send it on behalf of the teacher to the Academy for Lay Ecclesial Ministry. If any Level 2 classroom courses were taken to fulfill requirements, a copy of those completion certificates should accompany the application. The individual must assure that the application is complete. Incomplete applications will be returned to the individual.
